The Herald VW Cycle Tour 2016

Posted by PE Travel Blogger on Sun January 3, 2016 in Events in Port Elizabeth .

RIDERS in The Herald VW Cycle Tour can look forward to a safe racing experience on Port Elizabeth’s roads thanks to the municipal traffic officials and hundreds of marshals that will be manning the route.

Alan Taylor of Bukani Print, the event’s print sponsor for over a decade, is in charge of the management of the marshalling services and has been for a number of years.

“I have organised numerous events and organisers jumped at the opportunity of involving running clubs as we do this on a regular basis -- organising events and marshalling,” Taylor, who is involved in the local athletics scene, said.

He asks motorists to be patient during the rolling road closures for the 55km and 106km feature races on February 7.

It is a thankless job, says Taylor, as the marshals endure a lot of flack.

“They are up at 3.30am to start closing roads from Mount Pleasant right down to City Lodge along Beach Road."

He added that the public do not understand what events like The Herald VW Cycle Tour do for the economy of Eastern Cape.

“People need to realise sporting events are big money spinners for the city. A few hours of personal inconvenience can lead to a positive long-term economic impact.”

Taylor said that because The Herald VW Cycle Tour has been around for so long, it is important that the event gets the public attention that it deserves.

He calls on Bay residents to come out and show their support.

Bukani Print will be taking care of all the printing needs for the event – including flyers, posters, entry forms and the official race booklet.

All participants will receive a bumper 52-page, full-colour race booklet. It will contain all the information regarding the weekend of cycling. The booklets will be distributed with goody bags and handed out to all cyclists at registration on February 5.

“The race booklet gives riders all the info they need for race day and includes photographs of each of the professional teams taking part in the event,” Taylor said.

The weekend festival of cycling starts on the Saturday morning with the Powerade-sponsored family road races along the beachfront. At the same time, the Addo Polo Club will host the mountain bike events.

The event draws to a close with the prize-giving at the Hobie Beach race village after Sunday’s 55km Pursuit and 106km Classic. For more information, visit
