Algoa Bay Island Nature Reserve

Posted on Sat November 8, 2014.

Lying off the coast in the Indian Ocean of Algoa Bay, just east of Port Elizabeth, are 2 groups of small islands – the St Croix Island group and the Bird Island group

The Algoa Bay islands are ranked as an Important Bird Area for their global conservation significance in supporting breeding populations of African penguin, Cape gannet and African black oystercatcher. Among the islands, St Croix supports a significant portion of the worlds' ±26 000 pairs of African penguin, as well as a locally significant breeding population of Cape cormorant.
